About Salvation

At Open Door Bible Church we believe:

  1. that the salvation of sinners is wholly of grace; (Eph. 2:8; Acts 15:11; Rom. 3:24)

  2. through the inediatorial offices of the Son of God, who by the appointment of the Father, freely took upon Him our nature, yet without sin, honored the divine law by His personal obedience, and by His death made a full and vicarious atonement for our sin; (John 3:16; Matt. 18:11; Phil. 2:7; Heb 2:14; Isa. 53:4-7; Rom. 3:25; 11 John 4:10; 1 Cor. 15:3: 11 Cor. 5:21)

  3. the atonement consisted not in setting us an example by His death as a martyr, but was the voluntary substitution of Himself in the sinners place, the Just dying for the unjust, Christ, the Lord, bearing our sins in His own body on the cross; (John 10:18; Phil. 2:8; Gal. 1:4; 1 Pet. 2:24; 1 Pet. 3:18; Isa. 53:11; Heb. 12:2)

  4. that, having risen from the dead, He is now enthroned in heaven, and uniting in His wonderful person the tenderest sympathies with divine perfection, He is every way qualified to be a suitable, a compassionate, and an all sufficient Savior. (1 Cor, 15:20; Isa. 53:12; 1 John 2:2)

We believe:

  1. that in order to be saved, sinners must be born again; (John 3:3)

  2. that the new birth is a new creation in Christ Jesus; (11 Cor. 5:17)

  3. that it is instantaneous and not a process; (1 John 5:1; John 3:6-7; Acts 2:41, 16:30-33)

  4. that in the new birth the one dead in trespasses and in sins is made a partaker of the divine nature and receives eternal life, the free gift of God; (11 Pet. 1:4; Rom. 6:23; Eph. 2:1; 11 Cor. 5:19; Col. 2:13)

  5. that the new creation is brought about in a manner above our comprehension, not by culture, not by character nor by the will of man, but wholly and solely by the power of the Holy Spirit in connection with divine truth, so as to secure our voluntary obedience to the gospel; (John 1:12-13, 3:8)

  6. that its proper evidence appears in the holy fruits of repentance and faith and newness of life.  (Gal. 5:22; Eph. 5:9)

  1. We believe that the great gospel blessing, which Christ secures to those who believe in Him, is justification:

  2. that justification includes the pardon of sin, and the gift of eternal life; (Acts 13:39; Isa. 53:11; Rom. 8:1; 5:9, 5:1)

  3. that it is bestowed not in consideration of any works of righteousness which we have done, but solely through faith in the Redeemer’s blood, His righteousness is imputed unto us.  (Titus 3:5-7; Rom. 1:17; Gal. 3:11; Heb. 10:38)

  1. We believe that sanctification has a twofold meaning:

  2. That of setting apart of things, days, or persons specifically for God, and that the believer at the time of his regeneration is so set apart by God the Father;  (1 Cor. 1:30; Heb. 10:10, 14)

  3. The progressive work of the Holy Spirit in the believer, obedient to the Word of God experiences the power of the indwelling Christ for holiness of life and victory over the old nature, which work will be completed when the believer stands in Christ’s presence.  (1 Cor. 1:26-28; John 17:17; 1 Thes. 5:23; 11 Cor. 3:18)
